The simplicity of the geometry we used here sees itself complemented by the choice of materials, and the cleanliness of the details. We wanted the street to feel welcoming, light, and seamlessly approachable from all site entrances.Īs we move north of the site, where the Ballroom, Theater and Hotel programs are situated, the architectural expression changes drastically but at the same time lightly. The south side of the site is more traditional in nature, exhibiting traditionally shaped Song Dynasty sloped roofs, but with a lightweight feel expressed by our choice of materials and structural conceptual principles. Lastly, we define the One Life concept as our Boutique Hotel which represents the meaning of life itself: Unwind with a traditional cup of tea, relax at the bar we’ve surrounded by water and the views of the entire complex, rest at one of the Villas, and immerse in the traditional flavor of the region’s cuisine at the Hotel restaurant.Īrchitecturally, we have designed a modern Song-Style Classical Village which is thoughtful in function and sensitive to local materials and form. Approachable from every corner of the site, its transparency and its reflection on the lake incites its use and curiosity in the observer. Each of these can happen in our Ballroom/events Center, which under One Roof, gathers this diverse program. One Roof speaks for the collective gathering of people with varying purposes: celebrations, learning, and playful activities such as a game of Mahjong. The theater we have designed is such connecting window. Shows and performances can be seen from unlimited vantage points, making it a complete attraction to the Village. One Stage, is based on the idea of a window that being carefully placed in the middle, connects visually the east and west sides of the site.

Referencing the traditional Song-Style commercial street, we laid out a series of nodes among each of the Bar & Restaurant buildings that as they are pushed and pulled from the main pedestrian road, they diversify the space and create opportunities for social encounter & entertainment activities.
One Street represents the connecting path we have designed around the site which ties all aspects of it together. One street, One Stage, One Roof, and One Life. Thus, we gave a metaphorical meaning to each piece of our program to promote the poetic nature of our concept. Altogether they make up for the 12,858 sqm total buildable area in a 31,378 sqm site for the first construction phase of the project.ĭuring the design process, we felt the importance and value of the cultural history of our site. These connections create the pockets of space in which the main program of the project resides: A dynamic Bar/Restaurant street to the south, an open-air Performance Theater, an Events Center/Ballroom Building to the North, and a Boutique Hotel to the North East. The overall conceptual layout of Meishan Cultural Village is driven by multiple connections and water systems between Taoyuan Lake and the Inner Lake that reflect on what a traditional commercial street was like during the Song Dynasty. Through the orderly combination of natural resources and humanistic landscape, we aim to preserve the original beautiful scenery and enhance it by building a Song-style cultural village in China. This initiative is based on the deep cultural foundation of Meishan, which comes from the Song Dynasty ancient Sichuan culture. We hope that through building such a cultural village, we can create a tourism and vacation destination that seamlessly merges nature, humanities and lifestyle. As the hometown of Su Dongpo, a famous Song Dynasty writer, poet and calligrapher, it is surrounded with natural beauty and a balanced environment. The Cultural Village is located on the waterfront of Minjiang River of Meishan in Chengdu city.
